Creative Communities Coalition for Guaranteed Income (CCCGI)
The Creative Communities Coalition for Guaranteed Income (CCCGI) is a participatory-grantmaking guaranteed income initiative in which Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) provided funding and technical assistance to six San Francisco Bay Area arts and culture organizations, who then selected and distributed $1,000 monthly unconditional cash payments to 60 San Francisco artists for 18 months. Rather than YBCA designing and running the program itself, each partner organization used its own criteria to nominate artists rooted in communities typically overlooked by traditional arts funding, including artists of color, immigrant/refugee/undocumented artists, queer and trans artists, sex-working artists, and housing-insecure artists. The program was funded primarily through philanthropic gifts from Jack Dorsey's #StartSmall LLC and MacKenzie Scott, channeled through YBCA.

Participants received $1,000/month, unrestricted and unconditional, for 18 months (total dispersed to the cohort was reported by YBCA as $1.08 million). Unlike YBCA's separate SF-GIPA program, which used a public application and lottery, CCCGI recipients were nominated directly by six partner organizations (10 artists each) based on each organization's own community knowledge and criteria rather than a competitive public application process.

There was no public application; each partner organization nominated artists connected to its own community.

Application Process

There was no public application process; recipients could not directly apply. Each of the six coalition partner organizations (Black Freighter Press, Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, Compton's Transgender District, Dance Mission Theater, Galeria de la Raza, and San Francisco Bay Area Theater Company) selected 10 artists from within their own communities using their own criteria.

YBCA funded and provided technical assistance to the coalition but delegated selection authority entirely to the six partner organizations, each of which nominated 10 artists based on trust-based, community-rooted judgment rather than a competitive scoring or lottery system (in contrast to YBCA's own SF-GIPA program, which used a public application and randomization/lottery).
